The book tells the story of the young Bernard Offen's survival of the Krakow Ghetto, Julag, Plaszow, Mauthausen, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Dachau camps until his liberation by American troops in 1945. It also recounts how he set out, after the war, in search of his brothers, eventually finding them in Italy with the Polish Army. After several years in London, Bernard immigrated to the United States. Six months later he was drafted into the US Army to serve in the Korean War, still only twenty-one and five years after being in Auschwitz. In the 1980s Bernard returned to Poland, initially to confront the demons of his past and begin what he labels his 'process of healing'. 133 pages
